Support the inspiring legacy of Santiago Iglesias Pantin
In this half hour documentary film narrated by Maria Hinojosa (a co-presentation with The National Latino Communications Center, in association with El Centro de Estudios Puertorriquenos, Hunter College, CUNY), we learn about SIP from the recounting of a protest chant by Rafael Cepeda, a legend of the "plena" music genre in PR.
Letra en Español/Spanish lyrics:
Hay huelga en Puerta de Tierra
Por causa los trabajadores están en protesta!
Hay huelga en Puerta de Tierra
Porque los trabajadores están en protesta!
Y están allí los rompehuelgas
De la Isla entera
Los trabajadores
Toditos están en protesta
Hay huelga en Puerta de Tierra
Los trabajadores
Toditos están en protesta
Y dice Santiago Iglesias
"Hay que luchar hasta vencer"
Pero hay huelga en Puerta de Tierra
Y dicen los trabajadores
Toditos están en protesta!
English lyrics:
They’re on strike at Puerta de Tierra
All the dockworkers are protesting.
There’s a strike at Puerta de Tierra
Because the workers are in protest.
Out come the scabs from all over the island.
The workers are all on strike!
There’s a strike at Puerta de Tierra
The workers together are in protest.
And Santiago Iglesias says
“We must fight until we overcome!"
So they’re on strike at Puerta de Tierra
All the dockworkers have are in protest.
In 2025, we were honored to have musical maestro Emmanuel Santana perform the Huelga en Puerta de Tierra plena for us during the Foundation's visit to PR!
One of our partners recorded the real-time digitization of delicate papers in 2025. These documents will be the foundation of our comprehensive online archive. Until now, these documents have never been available to the general public.
We are deeply grateful to the University of Puerto Rico-Humacao and the Centro Documentación Obrera Santiago Iglesias Pantín (CDOSIP) for allowing us to digitize them and to Joseph Harrison Flores of El Archivo Digital de Puerto Rico for performing the painstaking work of scanning and indexing the microfilms.
In this video on workers' neighborhoods, Santiago Iglesias Pantín is mentioned in segments at about the 5 minute 24 seconds mark and at 8 minutes 22 seconds.

Santiago Iglesias Pantín enjoyed attending horse races. His interest was recognized by an annual race named after him, the "Clasico Santiago Iglesias Pantin" race.
His descendants residing in Puerto Rico would often attend as special guests and help crown the winner.
